The Jan Matejko House is a biographical museum dedicated to Poland’s most important historical painter. Located at 41 Floriańska Street, it is the house where Matejko was born, lived, worked and died. Created at the end of the 19th century by the Jan Matejko Society, the museum has been a branch of the National Museum in Krakow since 1904.
The exhibition features the authentic furnishings of the artist’s home, personal memorabilia, documents, medals, his extensive library and a selection of his paintings, sketches and studies representing all stages of his career. The museum also preserves historical props, costumes, textiles and weapons used by Matejko as references for his large historical compositions. Visitors can also see the painter’s reconstructed studio and the original design cartoons for the polychrome decoration of St Mary’s Basilica.

Dom Jana Matejki to muzeum biograficzne poświęcone najwybitniejszemu polskiemu malarzowi historycznemu. Mieści się w kamienicy przy ul. Floriańskiej 41, gdzie Matejko urodził się, mieszkał, tworzył i zmarł. Muzeum powstało pod koniec XIX wieku staraniem Towarzystwa im. Jana Matejki i od 1904 roku jest oddziałem Muzeum Narodowego w Krakowie.
Ekspozycja obejmuje oryginalne wyposażenie mieszkania artysty, jego osobiste pamiątki, dokumenty, medale, bogatą bibliotekę oraz liczne obrazy, szkice i studia – od wczesnych prac po późne kompozycje. W muzeum przechowywane są także rekwizyty historyczne, kostiumy, tkaniny i militaria, które Matejko wykorzystywał przy tworzeniu swoich monumentalnych dzieł. Zwiedzający mogą również zobaczyć jego zachowaną pracownię oraz kartony do polichromii kościoła Mariackiego.
