The Museum in Morąg is housed in the historic Dohna Palace, a residence originally built in the 16th century on fragments of the medieval city walls and transformed into a Baroque palace by architect Johann Caspar Hindersin between 1717 and 1719. Once the ancestral seat of the influential Prussian Dohna family, the palace was rebuilt after wartime destruction and has served as a museum since 1986, focusing on the history of the region and the legacy of Johann Gottfried Herder, the prominent philosopher born in Morąg in 1744.
Founded in 1964 through the efforts of Professor Emil Adler, the museum originally showcased Herder‑related memorabilia, later expanding its collections to include archaeology, regional history, painting and materials documenting the cultural and political heritage of former Upper Prussia. After renovation and modernization completed in 2024, the institution operates under the name “Museum of Upper Prussia,” reflecting its broader historical scope beyond Herder alone.
Beautifully restored and surrounded by a small park, the Dohna Palace remains one of Morąg’s most significant architectural landmarks, offering visitors both historical insight and atmospheric interiors.

Muzeum w Morągu mieści się w dawnym Pałacu Dohnów, XVI‑ i XVIII‑wiecznej rezydencji jednej z najważniejszych pruskich rodzin szlacheckich, przebudowanej na barokowy pałac przez architekta Johanna Caspara Hindersina w latach 1717–1719. Budynek, częściowo oparty na średniowiecznych murach miejskich, po II wojnie światowej został odbudowany i od 1986 roku stanowi siedzibę muzeum poświęconego historii regionu oraz postaci Johanna Gottfrieda Herdera — filozofa i pisarza urodzonego w Morągu w 1744 roku.
Początki muzeum sięgają 1964 roku, kiedy to prof. Emil Adler zainicjował zbiórkę eksponatów związanych z Herderem, prowadząc do powstania pierwszej ekspozycji w ratuszu. Obecnie muzeum, funkcjonujące w strukturze Muzeum Warmii i Mazur, prezentuje szerzej ujętą historię dawnych Prus Górnych — od prehistorii po czasy nowożytne — w tym zbiory archeologiczne, historyczne, malarstwo i pamiątki związane z lokalnymi rodami i kulturą regionu.
Pałac, otoczony niewielkim parkiem, jest jednym z najcenniejszych zabytków Morąga, a jego wnętrza tworzą wyjątkową oprawę dla prezentowanej ekspozycji.
