The Château d'If is a masterpiece of military architecture from the transitional period between medieval fortifications and bastioned fortifications designed to meet the demands of naval artillery. It mainly served as a prison throughout its 400 years of official use. Alexandre Dumas made the fortress famous by having his characters Edmond Dantès and Abbé Faria imprisoned there, a story told in The Count of Monte Cristo.
