Nestled in the heart of the Canigou Massif, the thousand-year-old Saint-Martin-du-Canigou Abbey stands atop a rocky peak at an altitude of 1,050 metres. A masterpiece of early Romanesque architecture in the region, it was lovingly restored during the 20th century. Since 1988, the abbey has been entrusted by the Bishop of Perpignan-Elne to the Catholic Community of the Beatitudes, which welcomes visitors on guided tours, sharing the beauty and serenity of this exceptional site.

The abbey can only be reached on foot from the village of Casteil, via a scenic walk through the surrounding greenery that takes approximately 25 to 50 minutes. A 4×4 taxi service is also available (F. Villacèque: +33 6 03 49 10 31).

From 1 June to 30 September: guided tours at 10:00, 11:00, and 12:00 (10:00 and 12:30 on Sundays and religious holidays), then at 14:00, 15:00, 16:00, and 17:00.

From 1 October to 31 May: guided tours at 10:00 and 11:00 (10:00 and 12:30 on Sundays and religious holidays), then at 14:00, 15:00, and 16:00.

Closed in January, on Mondays from 1 October to 31 May, and on Good Friday.

Au cœur du massif du Canigou, perchée sur un piton rocheux à 1050 m d’altitude, l’abbaye millénaire Saint-Martin-du-Canigou est un joyau du premier art roman régional restauré avec enthousiasme au XXème siècle. Depuis 1988, l’abbaye a été confiée par l’évêque de Perpignan-Elne à la Communauté Catholique des Béatitudes qui fait découvrir la beauté et la paix de ce site lors de visites touristiques guidées.

La montée à l’abbaye se fait seulement à pied depuis Casteil, après 25 à 50mn de marche dans son écrin de verdure. Un service de taxis 4×4 est possible (F.Villacèque 0603491031)

Du 1/06 au 30/09 : visites à 10h, 11h, 12h (10h et 12h30 dimanches et fêtes religieuses), 14h, 15h, 16h, 17h. Du 1/10 au 31/05 : visites à 10h, 11h (10h et 12h30 dimanches et fêtes religieuses), 14h, 15h, 16h. Fermé en Janvier ainsi que les lundis du 01/10 au 31/05 et le Vendredi Saint.
